In line with the EPC (European Payment Council) initiative to set up the "Single Euro Payment Area" (SEPA), the EBA introduced a clearing system, STEP2, with the objective of processing the non-urgent, commercial and private customer Euro transfers between European banks.
Such a European clearing system is intended to reduce the price of cross-border payments, and to bring straight-through processing (STP) to transfers.
Currently, the STEP2 project is in its first phase, exclusively dedicated to cross-border credit transactions, processed in EURO1 and STEP1. The following phases will settle direct debit cross-border transactions and domestic payments.
